Despite tough financing conditions for founders, a significant number of startups are still being established in Germany.

Berlin (German Press Agency) – According to the Startup Association, 2,766 entrepreneurial companies were established in Germany last year, an increase of approximately 11% compared to the previous year (2,498).

Helmut Schönenberger, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors (photo), said, “The current figures send a strong signal regarding Germany’s location.” According to the association, the number of companies established has recovered across nearly the entire country following previous declines. At least one-fifth (618) of the companies established are in the software sector, indicating a boom in the field of artificial intelligence.

At the same time, the association has observed an increase in bankruptcies since 2021. The current economic downturn is particularly affecting those engaged in online commerce.

In 2024, the majority of entrepreneurial companies were again established in metropolitan areas such as Berlin (498), Munich (203), and Hamburg (161), while locations near research centers such as Heidelberg, Aachen, and Darmstadt also saw increased interest.

German startups had benefited from increased digitalization and low interest rates during the pandemic. However, as inflation rose and interest rates increased alongside the economic downturn, investors pulled back: investments in startups were cut in 2023, and many startups lost business.
