Despite the economic downturn, the number of people employed in Germany reached a new record high last year.
Wiesbaden (German Press Agency) – The number of people employed in Germany broke a new record in 2024 despite the economic crisis. According to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, an average of 46.1 million people were employed in the country annually. “The number of employed individuals has increased this much for the first time since German reunification in 1990.”
According to the statisticians’ initial estimates, the number of employed individuals increased by 72,000 or 0.2 percent compared to the previous year, based on the 2024 annual average. Thus, with the exception of the 2020 coronavirus year, the number of employed persons has increased continuously since 2006. However, according to the agency’s statement, the increase has been far from dynamic since mid-2022.
The increase in employment has only occurred in the service sectors. Here, the number of employees has increased by 153,000 compared to the previous year, reaching 34.8 million people; these include public services, education, and healthcare, as well as the banking and insurance sectors. In contrast, employment has decreased in the industrial and construction sectors.
